The name “Shankar Tucker” is now famous among all Facebook users from the release of his song “Nee Nenaindal” featuring the Iyer sisters Viday and Vandan Iyer
Matha Amritanandamayi named the boy “Shakar”, and he came to India to study classical music. He is a clarinetist.
Now, a new song from the same team, ie, the Iyer Sisters and Shakar Tucker has come which reached 17k hits in just 3 days on youtube.
It is the song “Ashai Mugam”. Though I am not a Tamizhan, I think this song is all about Lord Krishna, and probably it is singing by his lover Radha ( not sure ! just a wide guess ! )
I just love the song. It is his second song that gives me energy all the day and I have already heard this song over 200 times in just 3 days.
Ashai Mugam is a Carnatic Song written in Tamil language by Bharathiyaar
Well, I just love the way these sisters pronounce “Nenjam” at 54th second, and also “kannan mugam marandhupoanaal”
Watch it below.

Lyrics
===========
aasai mugam marandhu poachchae – idhai
yaaridam solvaenadi thoazhi
naesam marakkavillai nenjam – enil
ninaivu mugam marakkalaamoa
kannan mugam marandhupoanaal – indha
kangalirundhu payanundoa
vannap padamumillai kandaay – ini
vaazhum vazhiyennadi thoazhi
There is a confusion in this song, as every one says that the pronunciation is not correct for some words in that song such as “ashi”. The mostly used pronunciation is “asai” in Tamil. However, this difference is because, from what I read , of the Iyer ( Brahmin ) family’s pronunciation. Iyers don’t pronounce “asai”, they pronounce “ashi”..
Anyway, music has no language, & just like hundreds of other people, I just love this song.
really great song and sweet voice…

@Aswini,
Mugam means Face. Asahi mukam, I suppose it is something like “cute face”, “sweet face”, “beautiful face” etc
Not sure though.
thank u….well i wanted the translation for complete song.
where i can the song in mp3 ? i just love this song very much.. touched my heart..
Yeah I say aashi too!
Thanks for the lyrics! 🙂
Nice blog!
love the song………….heard this song over 400 times…………what a tough lyrics…………but no language for music………….hatsofff to shankar and iyer sisters
Their pronunciation is typical of families that migrated out of TN at least 40 years back. No Iyer in TN today would speak like that. However this doesn’t detract from the merit of their singing and melody, and of course the immortal lyrics of Kavi Subramanya Bharathiar.
The meaning could be interpreted in the context of Bhakti or affection or love, such is the versatility of the lyrics and universality of meaning. Meaning can easily googled, it is written n fairly contemporary Tamil.
very wonderful voice. i wish i could have that voice.
very wonderful voice.i wish i could have that voice.
Nice song and lyrics,, loved a lot
well y izz tht u have sung only 1st n last stanza?? may i knw the reason plss..
this is so beautiful singing, and music!!!
I do not understand Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada or Telagu. So I wanted to know the meaning of the lyrics. It apears to be very devotional, so I was curious. But everywhere I looked for this, there are all stupid coments about the pronounciation by these so devotional singers. What happended to all people? No one even after so many -ve and some +ve comments about the pronounciation care to post meaning of such a beautiful song?!!!
Can someone who “understands” the meaning of what they are singing will post it, Please?
Can u tell me which movie this song belongs (or) any album can u give a small information please……………

The translation of the lines sung by the Iyer sisters:
aasai mugam marandhu poachchae – idhai
yaaridam solvaenadi thoazhi
I have forgotten thee lovely face,
whom should lament this grief with?
naesam marakkavillai nenjam – enil
ninaivu mugam marakkalaamoa
The heart has not forgotten the love, yet how can I forget the memorable face.
kannan mugam marandhupoanaal – indha
kangalirundhu payanundoa
Having forgotten the face of krishna, what use are these eyes?
vannap padamumillai kandaay – ini
vaazhum vazhiyennadi thoazhi
I no longer have a picture to hold on to, now how do I live?
There is something magical about this song.Or is it divine? The iyer sisters and Mr.Tucker have completely revived a song mostly sung and heard in music concerts .They have breathed life to this song in a sublime way.It brought tears when i heard it and understood its meaning. The song attributes a true homage to someone very dear to you.Best wishes to the team behind this wonderful offering.God Bless.
